From Roller Coaster to Routine: Tips for Creating Sustainable Health Habits That Last

Do you dislike roller coasters as much as I do? I don't just mean the ones at summer fairs and amusement parks. When you embark on a new exercise routine or diet plan and start to see progress, it can be really frustrating when unexpected events like illness or travel throw you off course. You gain momentum by making healthy choices, then life turns your plans upside down. It can feel like you're on a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs!

If you’ve struggled with this for decades -- jumping from one fitness trend to another, or yo-yo dieting -- it can negatively impact your metabolism, hormones, strength, stamina, and overall physical health.

When you’re sick of the ups and downs in your fitness journey and want to make it a smoother ride, I’ve compiled a list of actionable tips I use with my clients that empower women to achieve lasting health and wellness habits through practical, sustainable changes.

1) Set Achievable Goals with Realistic Timelines

Embarking on a fitness journey or nutritional overhaul can be overwhelming, especially post-menopause, especially if you’ve tried to improve your health multiple times in the past. Setting achievable goals with realistic timelines is essential to maintaining motivation and tracking progress.

  • Define Specific Goals: Instead of vague objectives like "lose weight," set clear, measurable goals such as "lose 5 pounds in 2 months" or "increase protein intake by 20 grams daily."

  • Break it Down: Divide your main goal into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, start by adding an extra 10 minutes of weight-bearing exercise to your routine each week.

  • Track Progress: Regularly monitor your progress and celebrate small victories. This reinforces positive behavior and keeps you motivated.

2) Focus Your Efforts on Making Small Changes for Long-term Success

Sustainable change is built on small, consistent efforts rather than drastic overhauls.

  • Incremental Adjustments: Begin with minor adjustments like swapping out one unhealthy snack for a protein-rich option or adding a short walk to your daily routine.

  • Build Habits: These small changes gradually become habits that are easier to maintain long-term. Once a new habit is established, you can introduce another small change.

  • Patience is Key: Understand that real progress takes time. Consistency with small, manageable changes leads to lasting success without overwhelming you.

3) Stay Flexible and Have a Backup Plan

Life is unpredictable, and having a flexible approach ensures you stay on track even when challenges arise.

  • Prepare for Obstacles: Identify potential obstacles in advance and brainstorm solutions. For instance, if you know travel disrupts your exercise routine, plan hotel workouts or pack portable fitness equipment.

  • Adapt to Change: If a plan falls through, don’t get discouraged. Adapt by finding alternative ways to stay active or maintain your diet -- do a home workout if you can't make it to the gym, or start your meal with a salad instead of the bread basket.

  • Maintain Momentum: Flexibility prevents setbacks from derailing your progress. By having a backup plan, you can keep moving forward regardless of life's ups and downs.

4) Honor Your Preferences and Resources

Making changes that align with your lifestyle, preferences, and available resources is crucial for sustainability.

  • Enjoyable Activities: Choose exercises you enjoy, whether it's dancing, hiking, or swimming. You're more likely to stick with activities that you find fun and fulfilling. If you don’t like going to a crowded gym or don't have access to equipment, make a strength routine you can do at home.

  • Accessible Nutrition: Tailor your meal plans to include foods you like and can easily access. Experiment with recipes that incorporate your favorite ingredients in healthier ways.

  • Realistic Changes: Avoid drastic overhauls that feel unsustainable. Gradual, enjoyable changes are more likely to become permanent parts of your lifestyle, leading to long-term health benefits.

By setting achievable goals, making small changes, staying consistent yet flexible, and honoring your preferences, you build a sustainable approach to fitness, nutrition and health habits that fits seamlessly into your life so that you can smoothly coast along into a healthy future.
